Entry Point Activities (EPA)

Under entry point activities, emphasis was given to create assets which will address the basic human needs and also will provide opportunities for income generation to the community. The EPA component was implemented in all 2370 VSSs and 56 EDCs, through which OFSDP was implemented. Some of the key activities taken up under EPA included: drinking water facilities, water harvesting structure, renovation of ponds, bathing enclosures for women, solar lights, spot lights, renovation in school, weighing balance, provision of radio, tent house utensils, Rope & Washer pumps, community agriculture equipment etc. for the VSS/EDC.

Livelihood Improvement Activity:

A total of 665 Health Camps and 129 Cattle Immunization Camps have been organized under the project in which 73,730 patients and 29715 cattle were treated. 545 VSS Animators were trained as Fever Treatment Deports (FTDs) in collaboration with the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP). A total of 10 nos. of mega eye camps have been organized in Angul, Keonjhar, Satkosia (WL) & Deogarh DMUs in convergence with Kalinga Eye Hospital (KEH), Dhenkanal, where 3577 patients were treated for different eye ailments. 1199 persons were provided with corrected eye glasses and 606 patients had under gone cataract operation. 2026 persons, identified from different VSSs of the project divisions were trained under Vision Technician Training Programmes (VTTP) conducted by Kalinga Eye Hospital. 1,47,119 Indigenous fuel efficient smokeless challahs were installed in more than 1000 project villages as a measure of conservation of energy and also to protect the villagers from eye ailments of different kinds. More than 1 lakh 10 thousand Long Lasting Insecticide Nets (LLIN) were distributed to VSSs members in malaria prone areas. Steps have been taken to mainstream the health care in the project villages through convergence with NRHM and for this purpose Gaon Kalyan Samities (GKS) have been formed covering 1098 VSSs.

265 educated villagers of the project divisions were trained as Para teachers in convergence with Odisha Primary Education Programme Authority (OPEPA) and engaged by the VSS, as instructors in the Non Formal Education Centres (NFECs) which were set up in those villages where no primary schools existed within a periphery of one kilometre.

Capacity Building

The Project adopted focused capacity development programmes for the forest officials and the VSS/SHG members. For this purpose trainings were organized for all the stake holders i.e. VSS Members, Animators, SHG Members, and Forest Staff on a regular basis at the Project Management Unit, Divisional Management Unit and VSS levels.

Capacity Building under OFSDP

More than 2.60 lakh person-days training for about 60,000 persons were organized by the Project Divisions, and about 1050 person-days training for 2498 persons were organized by PMU through 130 National and International Training Institutes. Capacity Building Support Agencies (CBSA) and Income Generation Activity Support Agencies (IGASA) were engaged for capacity building of VSS/EDC/SHG members for providing demonstrative trainings to the Treasurers, Animators, Presidents, Member Secretary of VSS/EDC and selected SHGs members of VSSs/EDCs on Accounting, Book Keeping, NTFP Under planting, Intensification of SMC and thinning so as to capacitate them to take consolidation works by themselves and sustainability of VSS/EDC in future once the Project is withdrawn.
